Global internet game

14 december 2002, 10:47

For four weeks starting 6 January, a Danish-developed internet game will give young people around the world the opportunity to win influence as citizens or members of government in five countries on a ‘virtual island.’

The new game will give Danish youth the chance to contribute to the development of a utopian society together with young people from other countries. Each week, a new dilemma facing the island will be left to the young people to solve, arguing for or against given solutions. The greater influence individual players gain over the outcome, the more points they win.

The weekly ‘problems’ will challenge young people’s knowledge in the fields of ethics, the environment and social relations.

The net-game will be launched at the internet address www.globalisland.nu, and is organised by net-portal u-land.dk and NGO umbrella group MS.

The first game’s dilemmas will centre on AIDS in Africa, the role of the pharmaceutical industry, tourism, or oil on the exploitation of natural resources, and the consequences of farm aid ordinances for rich and poor countries.
