Chinese Wikipedia
In China is Wikipedia sinds een aantal maanden geblokkeerd, waardoor de site alleen via een proxy-server te bekijken is. Dat bracht de Chinese zoekmachine Baidu waarschijnlijk op het idee om zelf een Chinese versie van Wikipedia op te zetten. Het resultaat is Baidu Baike (Baidu Encyclopedie), een wikipedia voor en door Chinezen.
Op de site mogen alleen geregistreerde gebruikers artikelen schrijven of veranderen. Daarnaast moeten alle veranderingen eerst door een moderator goedgekeurd worden. De site groeit behoorlijk snel, zeker gezien het feit dat ze gisteren pas officieel begonnen zijn. Om 8 uur vanochtend Chinese tijd waren er zo’n 3000 artikelen te vinden, en 4 uur later zijn het er al bijna 6000. Ik vraag me af hoeveel moderatoren Baidu hierop gezet heeft, want dit betekent dat er gemiddeld elke 5 seconden een nieuw artikel bijkomt!
Na een studie Economie in Maastricht voor DaimlerChrysler gaan werken op het hoofdkantoor in Stuttgart. Na 7 jaar voor deze multinational gewerkt te hebben in Duitsland, Indonesie en China eind 2002 mijn baan opgezegd om Chinees te gaan studeren in Beijing. Al snel mijn eerste bedrijf opgezet (consulting voor buitenlandse bedrijven in China, www.china-bay.com). In 2005 samen met een Chinese business partner (Gary Wang) een Chinese podcasting site opgezet, die nu de grootste video site in China is (www.tudou.com). Daarnaast vanaf begin 2006 als CEO van Spill Group Asia bezig met het opzetten en uitbouwen van gaming portals in Azie (o.a. www.game.com.cn). Daarnaast bouwen we casual en online games voor zowel China als de rest van de wereld, vanuit ons kantoor in Shanghai.
Ik denk dat de artikelen na het plaatsen gecontroleerd worden, of steekproefsgewijs.
Als je je moet registreren en de overheid checkt wat je schrijft is het idee van de wikipedia toch een beetje weg, lijkt me.
En als het controleren steekproefgewijs is , ben ik benieuwd hoelang dit initiatief blijft bestaan.
Je kan er op berekend zijn dat er nu ook materiaal word gepubliceerd wat eigenlijk gecensureerd had moeten blijven..

Er is ook genoeg info om over te schrijven die niet politiek gerelateerd zijn.
I randomly looked at a few articles, I think it is simple to have 6,000 or 20,000. Especially in the first few hours or few days. I am sure Baidu must have all these article typed and ready to go. Just some simple planning. Nothing worth mentioning.
What I also suspect most of the articles are readily available in newspaper or books. I don’t think they have problem with copyright – A land that take very little note about copyright??? Article Such as SunZi Ping Fa (the famous Chinese warlord). Or Chang Jiang, the longest river in China. Or Teng Xiao Peng … But if I looked at World of Warcraft (WoW), there is only 1 line and I suspect it was input by the distributor in Shanghai. IF you look at the same topic at Wikipedia, you would be amazed how much work has been done to make that topic so interesting even for me who dislike computer games. Anyway, would Baidu copied the article from Wikipedia eventually???
The point I am making here is, that the most interesting point about Wikipedia is the sustainability, and of its coordination with so many different nations, languages etc. One other fact that I would like to raise is, by blocking Wikipedia therefore letting Baidu creating a seperate ‘Wikipedia’ it only helps to create silo/getto, mono-culture, mono-lingua mentality in China. That I do not think is the right answer to be in a global environment.
Not that smart from the Chinese goverment, and even less smart from Baidu. If Baidu has the welfare of China in her intention, she would find other ways to resolve the blocking of Wikipedia from the Chines government. Therefore I wonder what is the ‘real’ reason behind Baidu’s creation?
