Google lanceert Google Ocean in Earth 5.0

Geruchten waren er voldoende, maar gisteren was het dan zover. De officiële aankondiging van Google Ocean (Google reageert niet op geruchten) , in de nieuwe versie van Google Earth: Earth 5.0 (via: ReadWriteWeb).

‘As you read this, I am at the beautiful California Academy of Sciences, announcing the launch of the newest version of Google Earth. This launch is particularly special to me because it marks the moment when Google Earth becomes much more complete — it now has an ocean.’

Zo kondigt John Hanke, directeur van Google Earth and Maps zijn nieuwe baby aan. Bij de ontwikkeling van Google Ocean is gebruik gemaakt van een hele batterij aan wetenschappers en (overheids) instanties. Denk aan de U.S. Navy, de NOAA, de NASA, National Geographic en de BBC. Op het Lat Long Blog schrijft Sylvia A. Earle, Explorer-in-residence bij National Geographic:

‘Three years ago, I met Google Earth and Maps Director John Hanke at a conference in Spain, and had a chance publicly to say how much I love Google Earth. “My children, my grandchildren think it is great to see their backyard, fly through the Grand Canyon, visit other countries,” I said. “But, John, when are you going to finish it? You should call Google Earth ‘Google Dirt’. What about the ¾ of the planet that is blue?’

Hanke schrijft:

‘Didn’t Google Earth always have an ocean? Technically, yes, well, sort of. We have always had a big blue expanse and some low-resolution shading to suggest depth. But starting today we have a much more detailed bathymetric map (the ocean floor), so you can actually drop below the surface and explore the nooks and crannies of the seafloor in 3D. While you’re there you can explore thousands of data points including videos and images of ocean life, details on the best surf spots, logs of real ocean expeditions, and much more.’

Op naar Hawaii

Met Google Ocean kun je naar Hawaii om koraal te bekijken. Zwem mee met walvissen (zie de titel van dit AD-verhaal: ‘Volg de walvissen live’). Of bekijk hoe we met zijn allen de oceanen kapot maken door overbevissing. Google-topman Eric Schmidt, zo schrijft De Volkskrant, zegt in een persbericht dat Google Ocean mede is ontwikkeld omdat oceanen belangrijk zijn in de strijd tegen klimaatverandering. ‘Bovendien staat het verlies aan biodiversiteit in de zeeën de komende dertig jaar gelijk aan het verdwijnen van het complete Amazone regenwoud. Dat blijft onopgemerkt doordat niemand het ziet.’

Historisch en Mars

Maar er is meer dan alleen de oceaan. Je kunt nu ook naar Mars voor een 3d-tour op de Rode Planeet. Of, ook leuk, in de nieuwe versie van Google Earth zit nu ook historie: ‘With this new feature, you can now move back and forth in time to reveal imagery from years and even decades past, revealing changes over time. Try flying south of San Francisco in Google Earth and turning on the new time slider (click the “clock” icon in the toolbar) to witness the transformation of Silicon Valley from a farming community to the tech capital of the world over the past 50 years or so,’ schrijft John Hanke.

Titanic

Ergens, in de afgelopen kwart eeuw, heb ik een fetisj ontwikkeld voor Titanic. Eigenlijk hoop ik nog een keer af te dalen naar dat wrak, maar volgens mij durf ik dat helemaal niet. Zou ik met Google Ocean…. Nee, vast niet, want er is maar 5 procent van de oceaanbodem ‘ontdekt’. Ik ga nu snel even de nieuwe Earth installeren. En op zoek 😉
