Strategisch denken is belangrijker dan het hebben van een strategie
Nadenken, uitproberen en bijstellen
Slechts 38 procent van de contentmarketing-programma’s heeft een gedocumenteerde strategie. Dan is er nog een fors gedeelte dat wel een strategie zegt te hebben, maar dat blijkbaar niet heeft opgeschreven. En er is een gedeelte dat in ieder geval bewust met de kip zonder kop opereert. Kan allemaal gebeuren natuurlijk. Het lijkt mij toch verstandig om wel een en ander op schrift te stellen, dan weet je in ieder geval waarom je doet wat je doet, wat je vertrekpunt is en waar je uiteindelijk heen wil en hoe je daar grofweg komt.
Afgelopen woensdag hadden we bij het Platform Content een Cleveland-nabespreking. Eén van de vragen uit de zaal was: “Ik hoor jullie zo weinig over strategie?” Mijn eerste wedervraag als ik zo’n vraag hoor is dan altijd: “Wat bedoel je precies met strategie?”
Strategie is lang niet altijd strategisch
Strategie is een woord dat te pas en te onpas misbruikt wordt. Laten we eens bekijken wat Van Dale erover te zeggen heeft:
stra·te·gie (de; v; meervoud: strategieën)
- wetenschap, kennis van het oorlogvoeren
- bekwaamheid om met behulp van de ter beschikking staande middelen een gesteld doel te bereiken
- plan van handelen
Als je dit plot op ons vak, dan betekent het grofweg: ‘Hoe breng ik mijn organisatie of het merk waar ik voor werk van A naar B?’ Dat schrijf je vervolgens op. Een goede gedocumenteerde strategie geeft uiteraard antwoorden op wezenlijke vragen. Dus niet: hoe bouw ik mijn Facebookcommunity op naar 40.000 volgers of hoeveel kost het versturen van tien persberichten het komende jaar? Met die twee vragen, and I am not kidding, werden wij bij Coopr de afgelopen week weer verrast. Als ik zoiets lees, dan denk ik vooral: Mensen, het is 2018! Wat een onzinnige doelstellingen. Maar ik denk ook: iemand is verantwoordelijk voor een heel klein stukje van de taart.
Mogen we je merk van A naar B brengen?
De eerste wedervraag is dan ook: op basis waarvan is deze opdracht, deze doelstelling, gebaseerd? Wie heeft deze opdracht geformuleerd met welke gedachte? Een andere vraag, al ietsje meer op doelstellingsniveau, die we heel vaak krijgen: ‘We willen met ons product X, een Y hoeveelheid aan publiciteit realiseren’. Ook dat is een problematische doelstelling. En wel om twee redenen.
“Is reclame de oplossing? Is contentmarketing dat? Moeten we onze heil zoeken in innovatieve technologie?”
Laten we met de doelstelling beginnen. Publiciteit. Als je bedenkt dat er ieder jaar tien keer meer nieuwsverhalen verschijnen, dan weet je dat de impact per gemiddeld nieuwsverhaal er niet bepaald beter op wordt. Als je tegelijkertijd weet dat slechts de helft van de populatie minstens eens per week een nieuwsmedium consumeert, dan weet je dat de doelstelling zelf al rammelt.
Dan de input. Dat product. Een product is, als we het Reptrek-model van The Reputation Institute moeten geloven, slechts voor 17,2 procent bepalend voor je reputatie. En dat percentage is de afgelopen jaren aan een stevige daling onderhevig. Kortom, er zijn nogal wat argumenten in de tas om de doelstelling aan te vechten.
Omdat het nu eenmaal zo is
Het probleem hierbij is dat het alternatief niet per se voor het oprapen ligt. Is reclame de oplossing? Is contentmarketing dat? Moeten we onze heil zoeken in hele innovatieve technologie? Dat laatste is met predictive analytics ongetwijfeld een manier om de juiste antwoorden boven water te krijgen. Maar dan moet je wel de juiste vragen stellen. En zorgen dat je de juiste dataset hebt. Want zelfs datasets kunnen flink bevooroordeeld zijn. Wat is dan de beste optie die je tot je beschikking hebt? Dat is wat mij betreft, simpel, zelf nadenken.
“Je zult zelf moeten nadenken, uitproberen en bijstellen”
De persoon die dat al twee jaar achter elkaar het beste demonstreerde op Content Marketing World, was Jay Acunzo (zie de video voor een vergelijkbare talk). Hij stelt dat niets zo erg is in ons vak als Best Practices. Ze beloven gouden bergen, maar bezorgen je in de praktijk meestal een mager zesje. Albert Einstein zei al eens: “The only real valuable thing is intuition”. We moeten geen best practices volgen, maar op zoek gaan naar de beste oplossing voor de situatie waar je zelf in zit. Dat klinkt eenvoudig, maar dat is natuurlijk hartstikke moeilijk. Want denk maar eens aan de volgende zaken in ons vak:
- Reclame is dood, lang leve contentmarketing!
- Contentmarketing moet je niet aan marketeers overlaten, maar aan journalisten!
- If I had only one dollar left, I’d invest it in Public Relations.
- De sleutel naar betere contentmarketing is mooiere verhalen!
- We moeten allemaal short form content hebben, want mensen hebben de aandachtsspanne van een goudvis.
- Jongeren consumeren geen traditionele media meer!
- Jongeren kun je alleen nog maar digitaal bereiken!
- Influencer-marketing werkt niet.
Al deze uitspraken zijn in ontzettend veel blogs, boeken, webinars en speeches terug te vinden. En in sommige ‘practices’ zullen ze ongetwijfeld waar zijn. Maar de enige waarheid die telt, is je eigen realiteit. Je zult zelf moeten nadenken, uitproberen en bijstellen. Afhankelijk van de context waar je zelf in zit, niet afhankelijk van wetmatigheden die in het verleden golden.
Je eigen functietitel verdedigen is zinloos
Wat dat vereist? Strategische denkkracht en nieuwsgierigheid, ook naar wat je niet weet en je eigen onvermogens en blinde vlekken. En die denkkracht heb je gedurende het uitvoeren van je gehele plan nodig. Als je vasthoudt aan het strategische plan en dat nooit bijstelt, dan heb je er weinig aan. Mooi vinkje gehaald in het volgende contentmarketing-, of ander, onderzoek.
Maar uiteindelijk blijft de opdracht nog steeds dat je een organisatie of merk van A naar B moet brengen. En dat lijkt me belangrijker dan het verdedigen van je eigen beroepsgroep of functietitel. Want die is zonder meer vervangbaar. Je eigen originele denkkracht, pakt nooit iemand van je af. Als je die traint en koestert, wordt die alleen maar beter.
