China rolt 3G-netwerk uit in Beijing en Shanghai
Newsbreak uit Shanghai, de nieuwste 3G mobiele telefoons zijn gisteren in Shanghai gepresenteerd aan het grote publiek. Een wakkere Marco Derksen heeft foto’s van het nieuws gemaakt en op zijn Flickr-account gezet. Kijk hier (originele lay-out papieren editie) en hier (wat verder ingezoomd). Hij of zij met slechte ogen kan het artikel van Zhu Shenshen hier op de website van de Shanghai Daily bekijken: ‘Dazzling debut for 3G service’.
Gisteren ging de verkoop van start, maar de verkopen vielen tegen, schrijft Shenshen. Dat komt volgens hem mede door de onbekendheid van het grote publiek met deze nieuwe 3G technologie. Shenshen: ‘People can purchase the TD-SCDMA (time division-synchronous code division multiple access) phones and subscribe to 3G services, with a number starting with 157, from China Mobile.’ De 3G service is in acht Chinese steden gelanceerd.
Want China Mobile was al een tijdje van plan te gaan testdraaien met het 3G-netwerk en zei vorige week op korte termijn te gaan lanceren. Tweakers schrijft afgelopen vrijdag: ‘Td-scdma is in China ontwikkeld en door de overheid uitgeroepen tot de nationale standaard voor 3g-technologie. De technologie omzeilt daarmee de hoge licentiekosten voor de in Westerse landen populaire hsdpa-standaard. Td-scdma zou bovendien met het dynamisch uitdelen van timeslots de beschikbare frequentiegebieden beter weten te benutten dan de hsdpa-standaard. Per zendmast zijn hierdoor een groter aantal 3g-verbindingen mogelijk.’
China kent natuurlijk een bizarre hoeveelheid mobiele telefoongebruikers. De International Business Times schrijft: ‘China has the world’s biggest population of mobile phone users, with some 520 million subscribers, and standards decisions could have a far-reaching impact on the equipment market.’ En ook: ‘Companies expect a multibillion-dollar wave of spending on equipment once China awards licenses for third-generation, or 3G, service. But Beijing has delayed a decision while it tries to develop its own system to compete with global standards.’
In het artikel in de Shanghai Daily beschrijft Shenshen de gekte. ‘From early yesterday, people crowded into Shanghai Mobile’s Renmin Road shop, one of the carrier’s two main TD-SCDMA outlets. The available phones were made by six firms, including ZTE, Samsung, Lenovo and LG, and they cost from 1,800 to 3,800 yuan (respectievelijk 256 en 535 dollar, koopje voor ons, maar dat is wel een maandsalaris in China?…). Om vier uur ‘s middags waren de Samsung en Lenovo telefoons uitverkocht, bij het sluiten van de winkels waren er gisteren ongeveer 50 3G telefoons over de toonbank gegaan.
Shenshen: ‘Customers were most impressed with eyeball-catching functions such as mobile stock quotes, video calling and TV on the handsets. During a video-calling demonstration, callers could clearly see each other but image quality was lost if they were moving.’
Ben zeer benieuwd of iemand van de Chinareis2008 al zo’n ding te pakken heeft gekregen om ermee te spelen… Ze gaan donderdag op bezoek bij China Mobile, dus dat moet goed gaan komen zou je denken.

Gisteren op bezoek geweest bij International Center for Wireless Collaborative Research waar ze onderzoek doen naar o.a. 4G. De verwachting is dat deze in 2010 operationeel zal zijn. Maw, binnen 2 jaar stoot China door van 3G naar 4G en zullen ze waarschijnlijk hun huidige achterstand op Europa inhalen (in Europa is 3G al veel langer in gebruik).
Verder nog wat aardige cijfers dat laat zien over wat voor aantallen gebruikers we praten: 210 miljoen internet users, 560 miljoen mobiele telefoons, 50 miljoen mobiel internet users in China (bron: Mobile Monday Shanghai).
We gaan morgen naar China Mobile, zullen we de ins en outs even vragen.
